About Me - Erna Robey

My passion for Mathematics started when I was in Grade 11, which is when the proverbial “penny dropped”. Suddenly Maths made sense and I could spend hours just doing Maths homework. I decided to become a Maths teacher (way back in 1983) and ever since it has become my goal to protect children from the “Maths bully”.

I have been fortunate enough to have taught at great schools in South Africa. My journey as a Maths teacher started at Framesby High School in Port Elizabeth, and after moving to Johannesburg, I taught at Randburg High School, St Stithians Boys College, Crawford College Lonehill and Randpark High School.

I love being a Math tutor and I learn as much from the students as they do from me. I embrace the different and varied approaches and way of thinking students have and nothing makes me happier to see a child grow in confidence as they progress. My first headmaster at St Stithians Boys College, Mr. Ian McLachlan always use to say “We all think perfectly, although we all think differently”, and every day, when I meet yet another student that struggles with Mathematics, I endeavor to unlock this potential.

Diary of a Math Kid

Long-term memory is important for learning Maths and Science as it is where you store the fundamental concepts and techniques that you need to use in problem solving. It takes time to move information from working memory to long-term memory and to help with this process, one can use a technique called spaced repetition/revision. This technique involves repeating what you are trying to retain but spacing this repetition out over a number of days. It is best to work at maths and science in small doses - a little every day. Diary of a Math Kid is a spaced revision programme where the students will be expected to do Maths revision every day, for 10-15 minutes. Apart from providing spaced repetition, this programme will additionally cultivate the practice of learning by actively doing mathematics, rather than revising, simply by reading over previous work. Or worse still, looking at a test and looking at a memo and thinking you are doing mathematics. Diary of a Math Kid is CAPS aligned and follows the CAPS sequencing as prescribed by the Department of Education. It will consist of 365 days of quick, interesting and challenging Maths problems. No test or examination questions will ever come as a surprise again as ALL the questions in the Diary are from past tests and examination papers. The diary is available for grades 6 – 12. If you would like further reading on the above approach, you will find it in the following book: a (MIND} for NUMBERS. How to excel at Math and Science. Author: Barbara Oakley, Ph.D. *Diary of a Math Kid is also available in Afrikaans.

Testimonials

“Use it Don’t Lose it” completely surpassed our expectations. Our students’ engagement in and spaced-repetition of content means that “Use it Don’t Lose it” has got everything a student needs to remediate and master their mathematics. We can highly endorse this programme for any school looking to add value to their resource list and create opportunities for growth and learning. “

“Thank you Erna, your course is fantastic. Patrick is holding thumbs for a distinction!”

Helen Knight

“Very beneficial for students. Because they have done revision every day, revising for the end of year exams is that much easier. I highly recommend this series.”
